British entrepreneur and Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson, has expressed profound gratitude after the King of Bhutan and the Himalayan kingdom’s spiritual community honoured the memory of his late wife, Joan Templeman, with a touching ceremony at one of the nation’s main monasteries.
Branson, who announced Joan’s passing earlier in the week, shared an emotional message accompanied by photos of the royal tribute. He said the outpouring of love from around the world had deeply moved his family, but the gesture from Bhutan stood out as especially healing.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has been in touch and shown so much love for Joan and our family over the past few days. It means the world to us,” Branson stated on his Facebook page. “We are also incredibly touched to see what the King of Bhutan, the monks and the people of Bhutan have done for Joan in the main monastery. So beautiful and kind.”
The images show monks offering prayers, lighting butter lamps, and performing sacred rites in Joan’s honour, a rare gesture typically reserved for revered figures and national friends of Bhutan.
According to sources familiar with Bhutanese tradition, such honours reflect deep respect and spiritual solidarity.
Branson added that Joan, who was celebrated for her quiet strength, compassion, and unwavering support throughout his entrepreneurial journey, would have cherished the moment.
“I know Joan would hope this brings comfort to anyone reading this who has lost someone close to them,” he stated, extending a gentle message of solace to grieving families worldwide
The tribute further reinforces the long-standing friendship between the Branson family and the Bhutanese monarchy. It also highlights Bhutan’s cultural ethos of empathy, tranquility, and communal healing, values that have touched millions through Branson’s post.
