In the Gospel, when Jesus was tempted by the devil, He refused power, wealth, and worldly glory, declaring, “You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.” This moment remains the cornerstone of Christian resistance to worldly seduction.
Yet, in observing the political and social leanings of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, now Governor of Benue State, one is forced to reflect deeply. His visible alignment with worldly powers, political elites, and structures of privilege raises a troubling question: has he chosen the path Christ once rejected?
The priesthood is a call to prophetic witness, not political comfort. Jesus stood against the systems that oppressed the weak. If Fr. Alia now walks hand-in-hand with those same systems—suppressing voices of the suffering, or cozying up to corrupt power—then we must ask: “Is this gospel or compromise”?
Contradiction lies not in his political role, but in his spiritual silence amid injustice.* If the Church must be in the world, it must not be *of* it.
The temptation of Jesus was a test. Alia’s choices may now be his. Will he worship at the altar of power, or return to the mission of truth?
