Enugu, Nigeria – The news of the passing of Senator Okey Ezea came as a profound shock to his friends, family, and the community he served. Mazi Omife Omife described Senator Ezea as a cherished friend, a great philanthropist, and a principled politician whose life exemplified humility and compassion. He recalled a significant moment in 2011 when he supported Senator Ezea’s gubernatorial bid in Enugu State, accompanying him to meet Anglican bishops like Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma of Enugu diocese, Archbishop Madu of Oji River Diocese, Bishop Evans Ibegha of Nike Diocese, Archbishop Eze of Ngwo diocese and many other Anglican bishops and philanthropists in Enugu state to seek their endorsement. “As an Anglican, I made efforts to secure the support of the Anglican community for him,” Mazi Omife said.
The statement highlighted Senator Ezea’s kindness and generosity, noting his habit of ensuring that Mazi Omife was safely escorted home after late-night meetings. “One good thing about him is that he would insist on using his convoy to take me home, no matter the time of night,” he recalled.
Mazi Omife also shared an example of Senator Ezea’s quiet philanthropy: “When he was Chairman of the Federal Medical Center, he ensured a brilliant orphan from Gombe State was employed, without the young man ever knowing who helped him.”
