There are men whose lives leave indelible footprints not only on the pages of history but also deep within the hearts of those privileged to know them. Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George, fondly known to me as Uncle Bode George, is one such rare individual. As he gracefully reaches the milestone age of eighty, I am profoundly honoured to celebrate him — not merely as a statesman, leader, and public servant, but also as a loyal and steadfast friend.
When I retired from the Nigerian Tribune after thirty-two years of service, uncertain of what the future held, it was Bode George who stood firmly by my side. At a time when familiar faces receded and pathways seemed closed, he extended to me the hand of trust, support, and guidance. His timely intervention opened a new chapter in my journey through public service.
Across life’s many seasons, Bode George has embodied rare virtues — loyalty, vision, courage, and friendship — qualities I hold with the deepest reverence.
His life story reflects discipline, devotion, and an unbroken commitment to national service. Born in Lagos, he distinguished himself early in academics, sports, and leadership, from his days at CMS Grammar School to his outstanding academic achievements at the University of Lagos, where he earned both a B.Sc. and an MBA. Rising through the ranks of the Nigerian Navy to the prestigious position of Commodore, he demonstrated uncommon strategic insight and a profound sense of duty — hallmarks of his illustrious career.
As Military Governor of Ondo State, he left an enduring legacy through his investments in education and infrastructure, most notably the establishment of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo — an institution that continues to empower thousands through quality learning. His contributions extended into national security and strategic affairs as Principal Staff Officer to General Oladipo Diya and as Director at the Nigerian National War College, where his intellect and commitment to nation-building shone brightly.
In civilian life, his service remained exceptional. As Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, he confronted longstanding congestion challenges, attracted crucial investments, and spearheaded the modernization of port operations — significantly enhancing Nigeria’s logistics and trade capacity. Within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he served with distinction as National Vice-Chairman (South-West), Deputy National Chairman (South), and ultimately National Deputy Chairman. His leadership footprint remains visible across Nigeria’s political landscape.
Yet beyond the grandeur of public office, what truly defines Bode George is his humanity. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to uplift others speak louder than any title he has ever held. His intervention in my life — offering guidance, creating opportunities, and standing with me through difficult seasons — reflects a friendship that is both rare and genuine. Through his mentorship, he rekindled in me a renewed sense of confidence and purpose that endures.
As he celebrates this remarkable milestone on 21 November in Lagos, I wish my dear Uncle, Chief Bode George, continued good health, great joy, and the peace befitting a life of noble service. His legacy — built on courage, wisdom, and compassion — will continue to inspire future generations and remind us that true leadership is measured not only by accomplishments, but by the lives we touch and the values we uphold.
Happy 80th Birthday, my dear Uncle and cherished friend. May the years ahead be as impactful, fulfilling, and rewarding as the extraordinary journey you have lived.
