The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a multiple-vehicle crash involving several trucks and a container-laden trailer on Kara Bridge, inward Mowe, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, the agency disclosed that the collision sparked a major fire outbreak and caused serious traffic congestion along the ever-busy highway.
According to LASTMA, several vehicles were affected in the crash, including heavy-duty trucks and a trailer loaded with containers, which reportedly caught fire following the impact.
The agency said its personnel, in collaboration with emergency responders such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the fire service, and the police, were at the scene managing traffic and working to contain the blaze.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the Kara Bridge axis for now and use alternative routes, as rescue and recovery operations are ongoing,” the statement read.
Eyewitnesses said thick plumes of smoke could be seen from a distance as firefighters battled to put out the flames, while stranded commuters lamented the gridlock that extended several kilometres.
As of the time of filing this report, LASTMA had not confirmed any casualties, but rescue operations and traffic management efforts were still underway.
The Kara Bridge section of the expressway, known for its heavy vehicular movement and frequent crashes, was completely locked down for hours following the incident.
