A two-term member of the Kwara State House of Assembly and prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Saheed Popoola, has defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with his supporters.

Popoola announced his defection on Sunday in Offa, his hometown in Offa Local Government Area of the state, marking a major political realignment ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Addressing his supporters during the declaration, Popoola said his decision to leave the APC followed extensive consultations with political associates, traditional leaders, and constituents who, according to him, were dissatisfied with the current leadership of the ruling party in the state.

He accused the APC leadership of marginalisation and lack of internal democracy, noting that the party had deviated from its founding principles of inclusion and service to the people.

“I can no longer remain in a party that has lost touch with the people,” Popoola declared. “Our decision to join the PDP is driven by the desire to realign with a platform that truly values fairness, accountability, and grassroots development.”

Leaders of the PDP in Kwara State, who received Popoola and his supporters, described his defection as a “major boost” to the party’s strength, especially in Offa and the southern senatorial district.

The state PDP chairman, Alhaji Babatunde Mohammed, welcomed Popoola, assuring him and his supporters of full integration and equal opportunities within the party.

Political observers say Popoola’s defection could reshape the political dynamics in Offa, a stronghold traditionally considered loyal to the APC, as the state gears up for the next round of elections.
