Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to advancing sustainable growth through innovation, climate action, and strategic investment in resilience, as Lagos prepares to host the 2025 International Climate Change Summit.
The high-profile event, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” will take place in Lagos from November 6 to 7, 2025, bringing together global leaders, investors, climate scientists, and policymakers to discuss sustainable solutions for Africa’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the summit reflects Lagos’ strategic role as a coastal megacity confronting the realities of climate change while pursuing economic growth through sustainable innovation.
As one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, Lagos recognizes the urgency of climate action. Our focus on the blue economy and green finance underscores our vision to build a resilient city that thrives on innovation, environmental stewardship, and inclusive development,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He explained that the summit will serve as a platform to foster partnerships between government, private sector players, and international development institutions to mobilize financing for climate adaptation projects across Africa’s coastal regions.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the 2025 edition would build on the success of previous climate summits hosted by the state and further strengthen Lagos’ position as a global hub for sustainability dialogue.
This year’s focus on the blue economy is particularly significant, given Lagos’ coastal location and its dependence on marine resources for trade, transportation, and livelihoods. We aim to highlight innovative financing models and investment opportunities that promote resilience and protect our coastal communities.”
The summit is expected to feature keynote presentations, policy round tables, exhibitions, and partnership sessions centered on ocean innovation, renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable financing for urban resilience.
Experts say Lagos’ decision to host the event ahead of the United Nations COP30 Conference demonstrates Nigeria’s growing leadership in the global climate discourse and its determination to align local development with international sustainability goals.
