Enugu State once again stood out at the 2025 Nigeria GovTech Public Service Awards, winning major honours and reaffirming its status as a centre of innovation and effective governance. The awards, held in Abuja and organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, recognize outstanding contributions in technology-driven public sector transformation.
At the event held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Enugu claimed two top awards:
The Enugu Geographic Information System (ENGIS), under the leadership of Chiwetalu Nwatu, received the Award of Excellence in Geographic Information Service. ENGIS was commended for its digital mapping excellence, land administration reform, and geospatial intelligence efforts.
Enugu North Local Government Area, under Dr. Ibenaku Harford Onoh, was named Digital Local Government Chairman of the Year. His administration’s initiatives including a Shop Allocation Management System, automated revenue collection portal, and a dedicated LGA website were particularly noted for improving transparency and efficiency.
ENGIS has dramatically transformed land services in Enugu. Prior to its reforms, land title processing was slow and cumbersome, often taking months. Thanks to ENGIS, this has been slashed to just 48 hours. Record digitization has also helped reduce land disputes, land grabbing, and improve access to critical services for citizens and government alike.
Dr. Onoh, upon receiving the award, attributed the success to Governor Peter Mbah’s Tomorrow Is Here agenda a plan he says has empowered local governments across Enugu to digitize services, improve accessibility, and deliver governance with accountability.
These awards are more than just trophies. They reflect Enugu’s growing reputation as a model of how digital tools can transform governance. They also underscore how technology, when leveraged well, can bring about meaningful change: quicker public services, transparency, reduced bureaucracy, and better citizen satisfaction.
