The Nigeria Police Force has invited former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, alongside some leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over allegations of conspiracy and incitement capable of threatening national peace and security.
Sources at the Force Headquarters in Abuja confirmed on Friday that the invitation followed petitions filed by concerned groups who accused El-Rufai and certain ADC figures of making inflammatory statements that could provoke unrest.
According to police insiders, the former governor and the party chieftains are expected to appear before the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja next week to respond to the allegations.
“The petitions raised serious concerns about utterances and reported meetings involving some prominent political figures, which we are duty-bound to investigate in line with the law,” a senior police officer, who asked not to be named, said.
While details of the alleged conspiracy remain sketchy, it was gathered that investigators are probing claims of a covert alliance between El-Rufai and opposition elements within the ADC to mobilize mass protests against the federal government.
Reacting to the development, a spokesperson for the ADC said the invitation was politically motivated, describing the allegations as “baseless and mischievous.” The party insisted its leaders have only been engaging in legitimate political advocacy.
Similarly, an associate of El-Rufai dismissed the reports of incitement, stating that the former governor has always expressed his views within the boundaries of law and democratic principles.
Meanwhile, the police have assured that their investigations would be impartial and guided strictly by evidence.
“The Nigeria Police will not be used to witch-hunt anybody, but we also will not tolerate acts capable of destabilizing the country. All parties involved will be given fair hearing,” the Force spokesperson said in a brief statement.
The invitation comes amid heightened political tensions across the country, as opposition figures intensify criticisms of the current administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
