Lagos State is set to host an international electric powerboat championship, positioning Nigeria as a pioneer in sustainable water sports in Africa.
The event, scheduled for later this year, will bring together athletes, engineers, and enthusiasts from across the globe to compete in high-speed races using cutting-edge, environmentally friendly powerboats.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Tuesday, said the choice of Lagos underscores the state’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation, tourism, and sports development.
Hosting the electric powerboat championship aligns with our commitment to clean energy, environmental sustainability, and promoting Lagos as a global sports destination. This is not just about competition; it is about showing the world that Lagos is ready for the future”.
Organizers of the championship explained that the races would take place on Lagos waters, with safety and environmental guidelines strictly enforced. The event will also feature technology exhibitions, youth engagement programs, and workshops on renewable energy.
Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, added that the event would boost local tourism, create jobs, and provide opportunities for Lagos residents to benefit from the influx of international visitors.
Sports analysts have described the championship as a landmark achievement that could place Nigeria on the global map of water sports while promoting cleaner energy alternatives in marine transport.
