The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) has ramped up production of made-in-Nigeria rifles, advancing the country’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing. At the African Defence Industries Conference in Abuja on August 25, 2025, DICON showcased its locally produced firearms, including the OBJ-006, a 7.62mm AK-47 clone developed in 2006, and the Hawk Sniper Rifle, created through a joint venture with Gray Insignia Nigeria. The Hawk, designed for accuracy and lightweight use in Nigeria’s challenging terrains, is set for full-scale production after successful 2021 tests, according DICON’s official site. Additionally, DICON has secured a technology transfer deal with Poland’s PGZ to produce the 5.56mm Beryl M762 assault rifle, potentially replacing older models like the Beretta BM59 and FN FAL.
DICON’s efforts align with the 2023 DICON Act, signed by President Bola Tinubu, which aims to boost local production to 40% by 2027 through a $1 billion deal with India. In January 2025, DICON delivered four million rounds of ammunition to the Nigerian Army, with House Committee on Defence Chairman Babajimi Benson noting its capacity to supply West Africa. The corporation’s Kaduna Ordnance Factory also produces licensed copies of the Beretta BM59 and FN FAL (NR1 Model 7.62), alongside 7.62mm and 9mm ammunition, contributing to Nigeria’s military needs.
