Dr Micheal Tidi, former Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area (LGA), Delta, has urged collective involvement in the provision of security across Nigeria.
Tidi made the call on Sunday during the unveiling of two books co-authored by ACP Anietie Eyoh, Commandant, Mopol Training College, Osun, and Dr Maria Uzonwanne.
Uzonwanne is a lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The books are titled ‘Police Operational Strategy and Tactical Leadership for Enhanced Professionalism and Economic Impact’.
The other is ‘Policing and the Perils of Duty: Understanding the Causes of Careless Death Among Police Officers.’
The publications focused on operational strategy, tactical leadership and police welfare, aimed at reshaping professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force.
As chief host, Tidi commended the authors’ foresight, noting that the books would serve both the police institution and the wider Nigerian society.
“Policing should not be seen as the duty of officers alone, but a collective responsibility of all citizens,” Tidi emphasised.
Prof Uju Ezenekwe of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, while reviewing the books, underscored the importance of intelligence-led operations, technology adoption and human-centred policing approaches.
He described the works as a compass for 21st-century policing in Nigeria.
“Professional policing fuels national security, which in turn drives economic growth. These books set a practical framework for both command and field officers,” he said.
On his part, Mr Efe Afe, former member representing Sapele, Okpe and Uvwie Federal Constituency, praised the authors for their courage and depth of research.
Afe observed that the books would contribute meaningfully to policy debates on security reforms.
“Nigeria needs research-based approaches to security management. These works will help reposition the police force for improved service delivery,” he added.
In her remarks, Uzonwanne said her experiences at the Police Training Institute in Osun inspired her writings.
She noted that her collaboration with ACP Eyoh was motivated by the need to address operational gaps and welfare challenges in the force.
“We are discussing operational lapses, especially the risks that lead to needless deaths among police officers in the line of duty,” she stated.
Attendees included Prof Mart Edema of Delta University, Abraka, traditional rulers, rights activists, police officers and other stakeholders.
