MTN Nigeria has announced a temporary service disruption for subscribers in parts of Adamawa, Borno, and Kano states from August 23 to August 24, 2025, to conduct scheduled network maintenance aimed at repairing a damaged fiber route. The telecom giant, in a statement shared online, said the maintenance is necessary to restore optimal network performance following recent fiber cuts in these regions. “We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work to enhance your network experience,” MTN stated, urging affected customers to bear with the planned outage. The disruption will impact voice calls, SMS, and data services, including USSD transactions, in communities across the three states.
The maintenance addresses ongoing challenges with fiber optic infrastructure, a recurring issue for MTN, which reported over 13,700 fiber cuts nationwide between January and June 2024, costing N17.6 billion in repairs, according to Radarr Africa. Northern Nigeria, including Adamawa, Borno, and Kano, has been particularly affected due to vandalism and construction-related damage, as noted in a May 2025 Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) report detailing outages in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara. MTN’s Chief Technical Officer, Yahaya Ibrahim, emphasized that such disruptions affect critical sectors like banking and emergency services, underscoring the urgency of the repairs. The company has deployed route patrol teams and is collaborating with the NCC’s Joint Standing Committee to mitigate future incidents.
