The wife of Anambra State Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has strongly condemned the reported assault on a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by a vigilante officer in the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by her media office, Mrs. Soludo described the incident as “barbaric, demeaning, and completely unacceptable,” stressing that no woman or youth serving the nation should be subjected to such inhumane treatment.
According to eyewitnesses, the corps member, who is currently serving in one of the local government areas of the state, was allegedly harassed and physically assaulted by a member of the local vigilante group over a minor misunderstanding. The case, which has sparked outrage on social media, prompted calls for justice and disciplinary action against the officer involved.
Mrs. Soludo urged security operatives and community-based outfits to uphold discipline and professionalism while carrying out their duties, warning that any abuse of power against innocent citizens would not be tolerated.
Our young graduates who are dedicating one year of their lives to serve Nigeria deserve respect, protection, and encouragement. No one has the right to dehumanize them in any form,” she said.
She also commended the leadership of the NYSC for swiftly intervening in the matter and assured corps members serving in Anambra of the state government’s commitment to their safety and well-being.
The governor’s wife further appealed for calm among youths while calling on relevant authorities to ensure that the assaulted corps member receives justice.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations and women’s groups have joined voices in demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, insisting that perpetrators must face the full weight of the law.
