The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a serving police inspector over alleged involvement in armed robbery and extortion.

The officer, whose name was withheld pending ongoing investigation, was apprehended after credible intelligence linked him to a robbery operation along the Benin-Auchi expressway.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, said the inspector was caught alongside some suspected civilians while dispossessing road users of cash and valuables.

>The officer has been taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to establish the extent of his involvement and identify other accomplices. The Commissioner of Police has directed that the suspect be subjected to orderly room trial, after which he will face prosecution if found guilty,” Nwabuzor stated.

The command condemned the act, describing it as “criminal, unprofessional, and a betrayal of public trust.” It further reassured residents that the incident would not be swept under the carpet, adding that the police leadership is committed to cleansing the force of bad eggs.

Meanwhile, rights activists and residents of Edo have applauded the swift arrest, calling for transparency in the trial and maximum penalty if the inspector is found guilty.

The suspect is expected to face both internal disciplinary measures and criminal prosecution under Nigerian law.
