Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election and former governor of Anambra State, has celebrated pharmaceutical industry icon Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa on his 75th birthday and book launch in Umuahia, Abia State.

The celebration followed Obi’s earlier farewell to football legend Christian Chukwu in Enugu, demonstrating a commitment to honouring national figures across diverse fields.

Obi took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight Ohuabunwa’s remarkable career, tracing his humble beginnings as a salesperson with Pfizer after graduating from the University of Ife to his eventual leadership as CEO.

He particularly lauded Ohuabunwa’s instrumental role in spearheading the landmark management buyout that transformed Pfizer into Neimeth, a deal estimated at $300 million.

Obi hailed this as “one of the most remarkable feats of corporate leadership in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry.”

“Through sheer diligence, vision, and discipline, he rose to become CEO of the company,” Obi wrote, emphasising Ohuabunwa’s commitment to integrity and innovation.

Beyond his business achievements, Obi emphasised Ohuabunwa’s dedication to building a more productive Nigeria.

He noted Ohuabunwa’s subsequent foray into politics, driven by a desire to address Nigeria’s shift from a culture of productivity to consumption.

Obi acknowledged the challenges Ohuabunwa faced within the existing political system, characterised by “vested interests and transactions,” but praised his consistent advocacy for a Nigeria led by individuals of character and competence.

“He encountered the harsh reality of a transactional political environment where vested interests and transactions triumph over ideas.

“He, however, remained consistent and persistent in what Nigeria could achieve if men of character and competence were given room to lead,” Obi stated.

Obi offered birthday wishes to Ohuabunwa, celebrating his past accomplishments and the enduring example he sets for future generations.

He prayed for continued good health, wisdom, and fulfilment for Ohuabunwa, and expressed hope that his vision for a “just, productive, and prosperous Nigeria will find fuller expression in the new Nigeria that is possible.”

The celebration underscored the importance of recognising and honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development and served as role models for aspiring leaders.
