The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) has confirmed the signing of agreements with four operators to develop greenfield sugar projects, collectively targeting an annual production of 400,000 tonnes locally. The announcement, made by NSDC Executive Secretary/CEO Mr. Kamar Bakrin on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, marks a significant step in Nigeria’s campaign to reduce its hefty sugar import bill and achieve domestic self-sufficiency. The operators: Brent Foods in Oyo State, Niger Foods in Niger State, Legacy Sugar in Adamawa State, and UMZA in Bauchi State, will each establish 100,000-tonne facilities, strategically spread across Nigeria’s agricultural belt to leverage diverse conditions and distribute economic benefits. The NSDC will provide tailored project support and cover critical costs to ensure viability, building on a recent $1 billion memorandum of understanding with a Chinese firm for up to five sugar estates. Bakrin has designated 2025 as a year of “accelerated development” for the sector, aiming to address food security and foreign exchange concerns, though success hinges on effective execution amid past challenges like infrastructure constraints.
