President Donald J. Trump has extended the suspension of tariffs on certain Chinese goods for an additional 90 days, effective August 12, 2025, as announced in a Truth Social post yesterday. The decision extends exemptions set to expire on August 31, 2025, covering approximately 352 product categories, including auto parts, medical equipment, and solar panel components, under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. Trump cited ongoing negotiations with China on trade imbalances and intellectual property concerns, stating, “We’re making great progress with China, but we need more time to get this right. 90 days, no tariffs on these items.” The move follows his administration’s review of trade policies amid tensions over China’s manufacturing subsidies and dumping practices.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) confirmed the extension, noting that it aims to balance economic pressures on U.S. businesses with the need to address unfair trade practices, as detailed in a Federal Register notice. The suspension, originally implemented in 2022 and extended multiple times, has been contentious, with some Republican lawmakers pushing for stricter tariffs, while businesses reliant on Chinese imports, such as electronics and automotive sectors, welcomed the relief. The USTR received over 1,100 comments during a public consultation ending July 2025, with 80% favoring continued exemptions. The extension applies only to specific exclusions and does not affect the broader 25% tariffs on $370 billion of Chinese goods.
