The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists to replace their worn out tyres and wiper blades for safe driving during rainy season.
The Oyo Sector Commander of FRSC, Mrs Rosemary Alo, made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan on Thursday.
Alo noted that replacement of worn out and expired tyres became necessary every rainy season to ensure a firm grip on slippery roads caused by rainwater.
She reiterated that using good tyres would provide a firm grip on the road, protecting vehicles from veering off the road.
The FRSC boss said that drivers also needed functional wiper blades to drive safely during the season because of the associated impaired visibility.
She noted that worn out or damaged wiper blades can leave water spots on the vehicle windscreen, obstructing the driver’s view and increasing the risk of accidents.
“Bad wiper blades can also cause sparkle or light reflection from oncoming headlights or streetlights, further reducing visibility at night“.
The sector commander also advised drivers to drivers reduce speed to have a better tyre grip when rain falls.
“Vehicle speed should be within manageable limit whereby a driver can easily stop the vehicle or easily branch off the road when the need arises unexpectedly.
“The best thing to do is to park when rain is heavy and visibility is poor,” she said.
She also advised drivers to ensure that the headlamps of their vehicles worked effectively, especially during rainy season for proper visibility.
According to her, good headlamp provides a clearer view of the road ahead, thereby reducing the risk of accidents caused by poor visibility.
“A good headlamp helps drivers to detect potential hazards, such as potholes, flooded areas and actions of other road users that can cause road traffic crashes”
