Elder statesman and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s fragile unity, warning that the country risks disintegration if urgent steps are not taken to adopt true federalism.
Speaking at a national dialogue on restructuring in Abuja on Wednesday, Nwodo stressed that Nigeria’s current structure is unsustainable and unjust, especially to ethnic nationalities who feel marginalised by the centralised system of governance.
>We are sitting on a keg of gunpowder. The only thing that will keep Nigeria together is restructuring—true federalism where all regions control their resources and contribute to the centre. Without this, the agitation for secession will keep growing,” Nwodo said.
He noted that the over-centralisation of power has stifled development and created lopsided opportunities, adding that no meaningful progress can be achieved under the existing constitutional arrangement.
Nwodo also dismissed claims that calls for restructuring are anti-North or anti-government, insisting that the move would benefit all regions by fostering competition, innovation, and accountability.
>Restructuring is not about breaking the country. It’s about making Nigeria work for everyone, not just a privileged few. It is either we restructure voluntarily or face a chaotic breakup,” he warned.
he elder statesman urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to show political will by initiating a national conversation that would lead to constitutional reforms. He also called on lawmakers and state governors to push for devolution of powers to states and local governments.
The warning from Nwodo comes amid rising insecurity, economic hardship, and renewed calls for self-determination across various parts of the country.
