Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has confirmed that the 400-bed Borno State University Teaching Hospital, under construction along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, will be completed and fully operational by the end of September 2025, as announced during an inspection tour on August 4, 2025.
The multi-billion-naira facility, approximately 90% complete, aims to curb medical tourism by offering high-quality healthcare comparable to international standards, serving both Borno residents and the broader North East region. Zulum emphasized its role in training medical students from Kashim Ibrahim University and providing affordable care, with a 5-megawatt solar power facility ensuring uninterrupted electricity.
The hospital, part of Zulum’s broader healthcare agenda, includes 15 specialized departments and aligns with a N89.97 billion health sector allocation in the state’s 2025 budget, which also funds an orthopedic hospital, general hospitals, and health insurance expansion, according to Vanguard News.
During the August inspection, Zulum expressed satisfaction with the construction quality and urged contractors to maintain momentum to meet the September deadline. The project, initiated in November 2020 with the foundation laid by then-Health Minister Osagie Ehanire, is a cornerstone of Borno’s 25-year development plan.
