In a major breakthrough in the fight against illicit drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested seven suspected top drug barons and several others in a sweeping anti-narcotics operation in Jigawa State.
The arrests were made following weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated raids across several local government areas notorious for drug-related activities. The operation, led by the Jigawa State Command of the NDLEA, was described as one of the most successful in recent times.
NDLEA State Commander, Hajiya Fatima Musa, who confirmed the development during a press briefing in Dutse, said the suspects were found in possession of large quantities of illicit substances, including cannabis, tramadol, codeine syrup, and methamphetamine.
“This operation was the result of meticulous surveillance and collaboration with local communities. We were able to dismantle a major drug distribution network that had operated in the state for years. The arrested suspects include kingpins who have been on our watchlist,” she stated.
Hajiya Musa revealed that over 300 kilograms of assorted hard drugs were recovered, alongside vehicles, mobile phones, and cash believed to be proceeds from illegal drug sales.
According to her, the suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the NDLEA Act, and investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the network and their sources of supply.
The NDLEA boss praised the cooperation of residents and urged continued support in the agency’s efforts to rid Jigawa of drug abuse and trafficking.
Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Government commended the NDLEA for the successful operation, reaffirming its commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace, safety, and public health.
The arrest of the seven drug barons marks a significant step in the NDLEA’s nationwide crackdown on drug syndicates, reinforcing the agency’s determination to dismantle criminal drug networks operating across Nigeria.
