Following the persistent fuel scarcity in the country, which Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of NNPCL, has presided over in the past five years, and given what has been described as the opaque nature of financial transactions by the NNPCL, the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, come under under pressure from stakeholders from across the country, to reform the nation’s oil corporation, including sacking the GMD.
In its argument in favour of such reforms, Civil Society Network on Economic and Social Advancement (CSNOESA) said the reform would ensure greater transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of the nation’s vital oil resources.
CSNOESA’s National Spokesperson, Abubakar Yale, at a press briefing Wednesday (today, August 14) in Abuja, added that the initiative would combat alleged corruption and mismanagement in the sector.
Yale underscored the importance of the country’s refineries to operate optimally, lamenting that the drive has remained a pipe dream.
He disclosed that CSNOESA would embark on a nationwide campaign to gather one million signatures to compel President Tinubu to take decisive action in addressing these pressing issues.
“CSNOESA calls for a thorough review of the company’s operations and contracts, advocating for adherence to global best practices in the oil and gas industry.
“CSNOESA is organizing a peaceful demonstration on August 22, 2024, at the NNPC Limited headquarters, calling for reforms that will strengthen the company’s commitment to the Nigerian people.
“Our nation’s future and the well-being of our people are at stake. We must ensure that the NNPC is managed with the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and professionalism, for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Yale said.
