President Bola Tinubu honored the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team today, conferring the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players for their 3-2 victory over Morocco in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final on July 26 in Rabat, marking their 10th continental title.
At a State House reception in Abuja, each player received $100,000 (approximately ₦153 million at current rates) and a three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Estate, while the 11-member technical crew was awarded $50,000 (approximately ₦77 million) each and similar apartments, as per multiple sources.
Tinubu praised the team’s “resilience, skill, and teamwork,” stating, “You have lifted the spirit of our nation and proven Nigeria is unstoppable when united.”
The Nigerian Governors Forum also contributed ₦10 million per team member, amplifying the national celebration of the Super Falcons’ historic comeback from a 2-0 deficit.
The awards follow Tinubu’s earlier pledge of support, including full payment of allowances before the final, and reflect a precedent set with the Super Eagles’ 2023 AFCON honors. Public sentiment hails the gesture as “well-deserved” but urged timely delivery, referencing past unfulfilled promises to athletes.
The ceremony, attended by ministers and sports officials, underscores Tinubu’s push for sports development, with a promise of continued investment.
