The First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has paid glowing tribute to women and girls of African descent, acknowledging their strength, resilience, and contributions to the continent and the world.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja to mark the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, Mrs Tinubu commended African women for their remarkable achievements.
She lauded their resilience and success in the face of historical and systemic challenges, highlighting their contributions both at home and globally.
“Today, I join millions of Nigerians in commemorating the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent, a day that honours the strength, resilience, and courage of African women and girls everywhere.
“Across the world, women and girls of African descent continue to excel in spite of facing historical and systemic barriers.
“We use this day to celebrate you as you take care of your families and continue to break barriers. I say well done,” she said.
“You have all come a long way, and we are proud of your achievements as you keep the African spirit alive.”
In a separate message, the First Lady also congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their outstanding performance in the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Describing the team as shining examples to young girls across Africa, Mrs Tinubu lauded their teamwork, professionalism, and determination in securing a spot in the tournament’s final.
“My beautiful and lovely Super Falcons, I congratulate you and your officials on qualifying for the WAFCON final.
“I commend your team spirit, determination, and professionalism demonstrated in all your matches so far.
“You are shining examples to young girls in Nigeria and across Africa.
“As you step out for the final match, I pray that God crowns your efforts with a resounding victory,” she said.
The First lady’s messages come at a time of growing recognition for African women in sports, leadership, and community development.
