The trial of former Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed, over an alleged N5.78 billion fraud is ongoing before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin. Ahmed is being prosecuted alongside his former Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Ademola Banu, for allegedly conspiring to divert public funds earmarked for critical sectors in the state.
According to the charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the defendants are accused of misappropriating funds meant for the payment of teachers’ salaries under the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), as well as for key infrastructure in primary and junior secondary schools, and for security operations.
At today’s session, the court was expected to continue hearing from one of the prosecution’s principal witnesses, Alhaji Suleiman Oluwadare Ishola, a former Accountant General of the state. His testimony is considered central to the EFCC’s case against the two former officials.
Further proceedings are expected to shed more light on the alleged financial infractions.
