The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) was officially renamed as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri in mid‑July 2025. The decision was taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, announced during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held July 17–18, to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, welcomed the renaming:

It was described as a way to embed Buhari’s values — service, integrity, and excellence — into Nigeria’s academic institutions.
Maury in the Northeast: The University is located in Borno State—a region deeply affected by the Boko Haram insurgency. During Buhari’s presidency, the federal government invested heavily in restoring security and rebuilding infrastructure in the region. Naming the university there was seen as symbolically significant.
Legacy of human capital investment: Buhari’s administration (2015–2023) established around 30 new federal higher institutions across Nigeria. The renaming was offered as a permanent memorial that reflects his focus on education and national development.
Supporters: Many political figures, especially from the APC and northern Nigeria, view the change as an apt tribute and a way to honour Buhari’s service and Northern roots.
Critics—including alumni, current students, faculty, and civil society groups—argue that UNIMAID has an established identity spanning nearly 50 years. They believe renaming it erases that legacy.
An online petition with over 1,500–1,600 signatories suggests alternative forms of tribute: for example, renaming a university in Daura (Buhari’s hometown) or dedicating a college within UNIMAID to him instead of altering the entire brand/name.
Concerns also highlight the logistical burden of changing degrees, transcripts, partnerships, and the impact on institutional recognition globally.
