At least 139 candidates across 10 political parties are contesting to fill the 57 council chairmanship seats in today’s Local Government Election in Lagos State.
Also, 842 councillorship candidates from 14 political parties will be battling for 376 council legislative seats during the election.
In all, 15 political parties submitted names of their candidates for the election.
A document obtained from the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) showed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is the only party fielding candidates in all chairmanship and councillorship seats across the 57 councils and 376 wards.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) followed by having contestants for 45 local council chairmanship and 259 wards.
The Labour Party fielded 22 chairmanship and 130 councillorship candidates, while the Zenith Labour Party has six chairmanship and 21 councillorship candidates.
Other parties that scaled through the registration of candidates’ deadline released in LASIEC guidelines for the election are Accord; African Action Congress; Action Allaiance; Allied People’s Movement; All Progressives Grand Alliance; Social Democratic party; National Rescue Movement; Young Progressive party; Youth Party; Action Peoples Party and African Democratic Congress.
Earlier in the week, the state Police Command announced that there would be total restriction of vehicular movement throughout the state from 3 am till 3pm for the election.
The Police bulletin indicated that the restriction of vehicular movement would apply to all roads and waterways within Lagos State jurisdiction.
Other details:
1. Prohibition on armed escorts and security
2. Ban on indiscriminate use of sirens and covered number plates.
3. All other vehicles, including those belonging to any quasi-security outfit and state security agencies are barred from movement, as no state-owned security agency is authorised to participate in the election security operations, in line with the Electoral Act.
4: Exemptions: Essential services such as those on medical emergency and other emergency responders and their workers, duly accredited officials of LASIEC, and accredited election observers and media practitioners on election coverage accredited by the state electoral commission.
5: Identification tags: All security agencies personnel and other stakeholders, including the media and election observers accredited by LASEIC for the election will be in possession and wear their identification tags certified by the commission throughout the period of the election.
6. Security: The Command sternly warns all miscreants, hoodlums, and thugs to stay away from the polling units, collations centers and other statutory places where the electoral processes are designated to take place throughout the state.
