The Federal Government officially launched Phase 7 of the Kainji Mass Trials on Wednesday, July 9, targeting dozens of suspected terrorists in a renewed display of the nation’s commitment to combating violent extremism. The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) described the trials as foundational to Nigeria’s pledge to uphold the rule of law and strengthen criminal justice processes in line with international standards.
At the flag-off ceremony, Major-General Adamu Garba Laka, National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), highlighted the collaborative efforts of the judiciary, law enforcement, legal professionals, and international stakeholders. He said such unity underscores Nigeria’s pursuit of transparent, lawful justice in its fight against terrorism. The trials, ongoing since 2017, have played a pivotal role in enhancing prosecution capacity for terror-related offenses and advancing Nigeria’s efforts to exit the Financial Action Task Force’s Grey List.
Representing the Attorney-General, the Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, acknowledged the partnership between ONSA, domestic agencies, and international partners in ensuring due legal process. Nigeria reaffirmed its resolve to deliver justice for victims and accused persons alike while preserving human rights. The initiative forms a central pillar in the government’s broader strategy to fortify national security and criminal justice integrity.
