Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of a Federal High Court, Lagos has adjourned till July 17, 2025, the trial of an alleged drug trafficker Ahmadu Abubakar, who was accused of smuggling 164.50 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa concealed in eight jumbo suitcases from Canada to Nigeria.
Abubakar is charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for alleged unlawful importation of the banned drug.
The NDLEA alleged that the defendant committed the offence
sometimes in May 2024 with one Black (now at large).
He was also accused of procuring one Ughenu Nnaife Francis, who is currently serving jail term for trafficking the prohibited ‘weed’.
When the matter came up for trial today the trial, the presiding judge, Justice Dehinde Dipeolu, informed both the counsel and litigants that he will not be taking up any matter for hearing due to ill health.
The judge therefore adjourned the matter till July 17, 2025 for trial.
Charges against the defendant reads: “That you Ahmadu Abubakar and Ughenu Nnaife Francis who has been convicted for drug trafficking sometimes in May 2024 with one Black (now at large) conspired to traffic in 164. 50 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic Drug similar to Cocaine, LSD, Heroin from Canada to Nigeria and you thereby committed an act which is an offence, contrary to and punishable under section 14(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“That you Ahmadu Abubakar adult, male, sometime in May 2024 procured Ughenu Nnaife Francis currently serving jail term for drug trafficking to traffic 164. 50 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic Drug similar to Cocaine, LSD, Heroin from Canada to Nigeria and you thereby committed an act which is contrary to section 21(2)(d) and punishable under section 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”
