Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, officially resigned from the ruling APC on Tuesday night, accusing the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding to rig the upcoming elections. Speaking at the unveiling of the interim executive of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, Amaechi said, “Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat… inflation is at its peak. And the federal government is busy going around trying to hijack the election. INEC is helping them to hijack the election”.
Describing the country’s state, he lamented, “People can’t buy food. There’s no money to buy food. Everything is gone,” urging Nigerians to root for a movement rather than merely “changing government.” He explained, “What must happen here is that we must start not just a party, but a movement… that brings Nigerians to, on their own, take over government, not us”.
Amaechi said he had withdrawn quietly from APC activities before officially leaving. “I left APC last night. I never attended one meeting… I warned them in writing, don’t even invite me to any meeting,” he stated. He warned that he would no longer stay silent in a party he described as riddled with corruption: “You can’t be in a club where the majority of people are stealing and you don’t say anything”.
