In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the gruesome killing of several Kaduna indigenes in Plateau State. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau, has sparked outrage across the region, with many describing it as a senseless act of violence against innocent civilians.
Governor Sani, visibly distraught during a press briefing at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna, condemned the attack as “inhuman, barbaric, and totally unacceptable.” He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and vowed that justice would be pursued with urgency.
“We will not rest until those behind this heinous act are brought to justice,” Governor Sani said. “The lives of our people matter, and no one has the right to take them away without consequence. I am in close contact with the Plateau State Government and federal security agencies to ensure that swift and decisive action is taken.”
Eyewitness reports indicate that the victims were part of a farming community from southern Kaduna who had migrated seasonally to Plateau State. According to survivors, the attackers stormed the settlement at night, opening fire and setting homes ablaze. At least 17 people, including women and children, were confirmed dead, while several others sustained critical injuries.
Governor Sani emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between neighboring states to tackle the growing threat of communal violence and banditry in the North Central region. He called on the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army and the police, to intensify intelligence gathering and patrols in border communities.
“Kaduna and Plateau share more than a boundary – we share history, culture, and a people. Our commitment must be to peace and mutual protection,” the governor said. “We cannot allow criminal elements to use ethnic or religious differences as a cover for violence. The security architecture must be proactive, not reactive.”
In a show of solidarity, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State also condemned the attack and assured that investigations were underway. He pledged that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
Civil society organizations, religious leaders, and traditional rulers have also joined in the condemnation, urging communities to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks. They called for peace dialogues and greater trust-building efforts across state lines.
Governor Sani concluded his address by assuring citizens of Kaduna that his administration will do everything within its power to protect them, whether at home or in neighboring states.
“We will stand by our people. We will pursue justice. And we will not be intimidated by those who seek to divide us through violence,” he affirmed.
