According to reports, St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu in Anambra State stunned the world by defeating several UK schools, including Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School, to win the inaugural UK‑Nigeria Debate Competition. The online event, held on June 19, featured top teams from both countries, and the Anambra students clinched the title after a fiercely contested final against St. Augustine’s College, Jos.
Participants praised their “poise, depth of argument, and clarity of expression,” with several international schools surprised by the Nigerian students’ confidence and knowledge. The competition featured rigorous rounds on global issues including climate change, governance, and youth empowerment. Organizers described the event as “a showcase of intellectual exchange and cultural diplomacy” aimed at strengthening educational ties between the two countries.
Plans are already underway for the next stage: Nigerian schools are expected to compete in a final event overseas, giving both Anambra and Jos teams the chance to represent the country on an international platform. This win not only highlight the academic firepower coming out of Anambra, it also sets a strong precedent for future global academic collaborations and exchange.
