The National Youth Stakeholders Forum (NYSF) has urged the Federal Government to recruit forest guards as part of a renewed strategy to tackle insecurity in rural communities. In a statement released in Abuja, the forum said recruiting and equipping a new generation of forest guards would help combat terrorism, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes, especially in remote and under-policed areas. They called for the initiative to be backed with better intelligence funding, enhanced inter-agency cooperation, and stronger welfare support for security personnel.
The group also demanded reforms to improve training, provide free healthcare for security workers, and expand youth participation in community safety programmes. According to the forum, rural violence has forced many to abandon farms, deepening the country’s food crisis and displacement levels. They warned that without urgent grassroots-focused security measures, national peace and food security will remain fragile. The call aligns with growing concerns about how Nigeria’s current security structure can cope with rural threats.
