President Bola Tinubu said on Wednesday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will welcome Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike “the day he changes his mind and registers with the Progressives,” adding that with Wike on board the party could “join him in singing ‘as e dey sweet us, e dey pain them’”. Tinubu made the remarks during the commissioning of the new N16 arterial road linking Shehu Shagari Way to Wole Soyinka Way in Abuja, while also commending Wike’s collaborative leadership and dedication to community compensation.
Wike, though laughing off the invitation, replied claiming that the clear results of federal projects have successfully “neutralized” any opposition coalition. He said, “Your good work has killed the Coalition,” noting that national TV stations are now filled with images of Tinubu’s initiatives, giving critics “high blood pressure” as they watch what he described as a 17-day showcase of projects. The minister also highlighted how contractor confidence has changed, with companies now bidding and mobilizing ahead of formal approvals, demonstrating restored faith in governance.
Tinubu’s open invitation and Wike’s strong support show a growing closeness that might change political power before the 2027 elections. Even though Wike is still officially in the opposition PDP, his role in the Tinubu administration and his comments about breaking up rival coalitions brings up a lot of questions. Both seem to be using infrastructure projects not just to serve the public, but as a political tool. With Wike continuing to champion Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda from within the FCT and hinting at more projects rolling out in satellite towns, the question now is not if he’ll join the APC, but when.
