Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed by his family in a statement released on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais served as CJN from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. He earned widespread respect for his firm advocacy of judicial independence and his efforts to uphold the integrity of the judiciary through reform and principled leadership.
Throughout his distinguished career, Justice Uwais was known for his unwavering commitment to justice, constitutional rule, and the protection of democratic values.
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts heavy yet full of gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation,” the family announced.
The funeral prayer for the late jurist will take place today at the National Mosque in Abuja, immediately following the Juma’at prayers.
Justice Uwais is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a lasting legacy that continues to influence Nigeria’s legal system.
