To further confront the growing challenges posed by climate change, particularly in critical sectors such as aviation, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo has announced the formation of a Communications Committee that will document and report progress on climate-related programmes to the ministry.
The committee comprising representatives from the House Committees on Aviation and Climate Change, FAAN, NCAA, NAMA, NiMET, and the Special Assistant to the Minister on Climate Change will among other things submit quarterly reports on climate matters.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo put together the committee during a courtesy visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Keyamo who reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to global climate change initiatives, emphasized the Federal Government’s readiness to implement sustainable practices in the aviation industry, noting
that the aviation sector is pivotal to achieving Nigeria’s climate goals.
He stressed the importance of innovation and fuel efficiency in reducing emissions, saying that collaborative efforts with the National Assembly would strengthen policy frameworks aimed at environmental sustainability.
“The aviation industry has a vital role to play in achieving a sustainable future,” Keyamo said. “Through our collaboration with the House Committee on Climate Change, we aim to ensure that Nigeria’s aviation sector leads by example in adopting green technologies and practices.”
He noted that agencies under the Ministry, are already implementing key initiatives aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change.
“As a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Nigeria is fully aligned with global climate efforts, including the Paris Agreement and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA),” he added.
Keyamo pledged the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with lawmakers to ensure the development of an environmentally responsible aviation sector.
In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee on Climate Change and Security, Mr. Kama Nkemkanma, lauded the Ministry’s strategic contributions to national development.
He emphasized the need for deeper collaboration to confront the growing challenges posed by climate change, particularly in critical sectors such as aviation.
Mr. Nkemkanma stated that the visit was part of the Committee’s mandate to engage stakeholders across government and the private sector to galvanize greater climate action.
He noted that the Climate Change Act 2021 provides a solid framework for Nigeria’s journey toward sustainable development and commended the Minister’s compliance with the Act, acknowledging the widespread recognition of his efforts.
