A MILD drama unfolded during an interview on Brekete Family’s official YouTube channel when Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Peter Onyekachi, was asked to withdraw a statement he made about Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The interview, which centered on the controversy surrounding Senator Natasha’s new seat in the Senate, took an unexpected turn when Onyekachi accused her of “lying against the Senate and the Senate President.”
His remark came in response to her recent outburst in the Senate, where she expressed dissatisfaction with being moved from her original seat.
“Senator Natasha was in the last row because she joined last around September 2023, but we decided to bring her forward, which I even see as a promotion because the next senator to join will take the last seat. I must address this because she spoke to this assembly lying against the Senate and Senate President,” Onyekachi said.
However, before he could continue, the show’s anchor, Ahmed Isah, immediately interrupted, urging him to take back his choice of words.
“Distinguished sir, please withdraw that word ‘lie’ because we didn’t allow her to insult you,” Isah said.
In response, Onyekachi promptly complied, saying, “It is hereby withdrawn,” before the interview continued.
The exchange added to the ongoing controversy surrounding Natasha’s seat adjustment, which followed the defection of Senators Ned Nwoko (PDP to APC) and Ezenwa (Labour Party to APC). Their departures left vacant seats in the opposition’s section, prompting a rearrangement that moved Senator Natasha to a different position.
Onyekachi defended the decision, noting that the new seating arrangement was purely administrative and not a move to undermine Senator Natasha.
“Two weeks ago, Senator Ned Nwoko defected from the PDP to the APC. I hope you are all aware. Senator Ezenwa from Imo State also defected from the Labour Party to the APC, thereby creating two vacancies within the opposition’s seating arrangement. Now, the Senate President, through the office of the Chief Whip, had to rearrange the seats, and Senator Natasha was brought closer,” he added.
