As a political expert, Karel De Gucht shines his light on the situation in the U.S., Ukraine and Russia. For fourteen years the Belgian politician was a Member of the European Parliament, for five years he was Minister of Foreign Affairs in Belgium, he was also Deputy Prime Minister, Euro Commissioner for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (2009-2010), and Euro Commissioner for Trade (2010-2014). So politically, De Gucht has tons of experience. However, he is dumbfounded by what is currently happening in the United States.
Donald Trump has been targeting Europe this past week. The U.S. president threatened hefty tariffs, he wants to crack down on European AI legislation and called Vladimir Putin for a deal on Ukraine. And on top of that, Vice President J.D. Vance lashed out at European political leaders in Munich.
‘Is the U.S. still a reliable ally?’ was the question Het Nieuwsblad put to experienced European politician Karel De Gucht.
With all that is happening there now? No. America is not even an ally. It is a country that goes against our interests and even thinks it can impose rules on us. That’s really dangerous. Elon Musk, who forms a kind of siamese twin with Trump, openly supports AfD in Germany. That is ‘our ally,’ actually coming to attack us on the ground,” the liberal stated.
“Many argue that Trump thinks purely transactional. For what goes. But is that really the case? My impression is that he wants to mold the world in his image. Look at Musk and AfD. Listen to what Vance came to Munich to proclaim,” De Gucht sounds the alarm in Het Nieuwsblad. (MSN)
