Adewale Shittu on Saturday – yesterday, February 15 – emerged the winner of the third edition of the Senior Special (SS28) Golf Championship at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shittu, who plays 28 handicap emerged the overall winner after scoring 103 Gross with 75 Nett.
SS28 was held for 28 Handicap players to encourage them and give them the opportunity to play and mingle with old golfers on the course.
Speaking after the presentation, Shittu attributed the success to hard work and love for the game.
He, however, promised to improve on his handicap, pointing out that consistency is key in golf.
“I will continue to work hard so as to improve on my handicap and the only way to do this is to be regular on the course,” the winner said.
The Captain of the club, Seyi Alaba, while speaking during the competition’s closing ceremony said no fewer than 120 golfers participated in the event.
“It was unprecedented to have such a number. However, I can assure that the competition has come to stay.
“I appreciate members and individuals who contributed to the success of the tournament,” he said.
Alaba lauded Adedeji Olajide, a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Ibadan South-West/North-West Constituency who was a major donor to the championship.
He said the competition was part of the club’s commitment to promoting the game of golf among members and in the state.
The club captain noted that the event served as a social gathering with opportunities for networking and sharing experiences among players.
He emphasised the importance of inclusivity and the role of senior golfers at the club.
“I can say there is an improvement among the 28 handicap players with some of the outcome of today’s results.
“We observed that we have many members who have stayed so long playing 28 handicaps and that is the essence of organising this championship.
“With this tournament, some of them who played better would be upgraded to the next handicap,” Alaba said.
Similarly, Olajide pledged to do more for the development of sports, especially in golfing circles.
He described the game as a game of life and a good cause to live a good life and to exercise one’s body,” he said.
A former Lady Captain of the club, Otolola Adesiyan, claimed the Ladies Guest Best Nett winner’s title with 94 Gross and 73 Nett.
