Ndigbo Lagos joins the nation in mourning the passing of a towering figure in Nigeria’s political history, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who transitioned peacefully on February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos. Pa Adebanjo, a fearless advocate for justice, democracy, and true federalism, leaves behind a legacy that has profoundly shaped Nigeria’s political landscape.
As a leader of Afenifere, Pa Adebanjo dedicated his 96 years to the relentless pursuit of equity, autonomy, and national unity. His unwavering commitment to these ideals resonated deeply with Ndigbo Lagos, particularly in his advocacy for true federalism—a cause that aligns with the aspirations of the Igbo people and other marginalized groups in Nigeria.
Pa Adebanjo’s laboured friendship with Ndigbo was a testament to his belief in a united yet diverse Nigeria. He stood as a bridge between the Southwest and the Southeast, fostering dialogue and understanding between the regions. His support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, further underscored his commitment to meritocracy, justice, and the empowerment of all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity or creed.
Ndigbo Lagos recalls with gratitude Pa Adebanjo’s unflinching devotion to the principles of true federalism, which he championed alongside other nationalists. His voice was a constant reminder that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and that equitable resource allocation and regional autonomy are essential for national progress.
In moments of national crisis, Pa Adebanjo’s courage was unparalleled. His role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the struggle to reclaim democracy after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election remains a shining example of his dedication to justice and democratic governance. His principled stance during this period inspired countless Nigerians, including the Igbo community, to remain steadfast in the fight for a fair and just society.
Ndigbo Lagos also acknowledges the personal bond shared between Pa Adebanjo and several President’s of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and other Igbo Leaders, who saw in him a father figures and a reliable ally. While our political paths may often differ over the years, our mutual respect and shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress remained unwavering. This relationship serves as a reminder that, despite differences, unity and collaboration are possible for the greater good of the nation.
As we mourn the loss of this great patriot, Ndigbo Lagos celebrates Pa Adebanjo’s enduring legacy—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
