Today – Thursday, February 26 is the deadline for federal workers to accept buyouts from Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the latest inflection point in Trump’s efforts to shrink the government and install loyalists.
Over 20,000 20,000 employees have accepted the offer so far, according to USA Today. But some others are skeptical about its guarantees. Those who stay were told they’d have to embrace new “performance standards” and be “loyal and trustworthy” in their work.
The deadline comes as Justice Department officials agreed to limit the access Musk’s DOGE team has to Treasury Department payment systems after federal worker and retiree groups alleged it violated privacy laws.
Since President Trump took office, Musk, who was named a special government employee, has quickly consolidated control over large areas of government. Democrats have accused him of taking power illegally.
