Imo State high courts sitting in Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma divisions will not sit on Thursday – today, January 23 –Â following the killing of a popular lawyer in the State, Barrister Chinedu Nwowu, by unknown gunmen.
The lawyer, it was gathered, was reportedly double-crossed by the gunmen who shot dead on the spot Wednesday evening – yesterday, January 22 – in Mgbidi, his hometown.
A source said that his killers forcefully blocked the victim while he was driving and shot him dead on the spot.
The development has caused panic in the State as no reason has as yet been adduced for the gruesome murder of Barrister Nwowu.
Following the tragic development, the Orlu Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), of which the deceased was a prominent member, announced that no court session would go on Thursday (today) in Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma axis of the state.
This is even as the Orlu branch of the NBA has announced an emergency meeting of the members following the killing of the lawyer.
A memo issued by Chukwuemeka Okoro, on behalf of the branch, notified that the emergency meeting starts at 10 am at the High Court in Mgbidi.
The statement read: “Following the gruesome murder of one of us, Chinedu Nwowu last night in his town, Mgbidi, all lawyers of Oru/Oguta Forum are hereby notified of a crucial emergency meeting this morning by 10am at the High Court, Mgbidi.
“The Mgbidi, Oguta and Omumma High Courts will not sit today. Please, be punctual.”
The NBA chairman of Orlu Branch, Ben Amukamara, told our correspondent that the members were meeting at the Mgbidi High Court this morning following the killing of the lawyer, reiterating that, in honour of the deceased, no court in Oguta, Mgbidi and Omumma axis of the State would be sitting today.
Police spokesman in the State, Henry Okoye, could not be reached for his comments on the gruesome killing of the lawyer, as of the time of filing this report.
