Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has described education as the most critical tool for development and future of Nigerians.
Obi stated this yesterday (Saturday, November 30), at the 20th Anniversary of America University of Nigeria (AUN) and Founders Day celebration in Yola on Saturday.
Obi, who was the Keynote Speaker at the anniversary, commended Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice-President, for his sacrifice, investment and vision in coming up with AUN for the development of education in the country.
Obi tasked the products of AUN to understand that they were groomed to be leaders of tomorrow hence the need to understand the qualities of leadership for them to contribute their part to the development of Nigeria.
“The more educated society is educated the more they develop and have quality life,” he said.
In his address, Abubakar said the 20th anniversary marked a milestone in his journey of commitment to the development of education in the country, to shape the future.
Abubakar appreciated the American government, key stakeholders, pioneer board Chairman and his members for their eminent contribution to the success of the institution in the country.
He described the Founder’s Day as also a day to celebrate those who contributed and have continued to contribute to the development of the institution.
In his remarks, Dewayne Frazier, AUN President noted that “AUN is first of its kind in Nigeria, impacting positively on development of education in the last 20 years.”
He described Atiku as a visionary founder who had the passion to come up with an institution such as AUN in Nigeria, especially by having it in Yola.
The institution’s facilities are up to international standards and are open to all, irrespective of social status, the AUN president added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Obi also visited the “Almajiri” undergoing literacy and numeracy training, as part of community service by the AUN.
