Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, member representing Aba North/Aba South in the House of Representatives, has publicly expressed regret and extended an apology following a widely circulated video showing him in an altercation with an Uber driver at his residence. The video, which surfaced earlier this week, depicted the lawmaker engaging in behavior he himself acknowledged as “unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official.”

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable,” Ikwechegh said in his statement. “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.” He further conveyed that he understood the impact of his actions, noting that they had caused “harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large.”

In response to the incident, Ikwechegh confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police, who have initiated an investigation into the matter. He expressed his support for their efforts, stating, “I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.” The incident was swiftly condemned by both the Nigerian Police and Ikwechegh’s political party, a move he commended as part of the nation’s collective commitment to justice and citizen rights.

In his statement, Ikwechegh emphasized a commitment to personal reform, explaining his decision to seek professional counseling. He also announced plans to engage in community service initiatives aimed at fostering empathy, respect, and understanding. “I am taking immediate steps to address the underlying issues that led to this incident,” he stated. “I will be engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding.”

Ikwechegh concluded his message with a call to action, urging Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of tolerance and mutual respect. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he said, underscoring his belief that such values are essential for a just society.

The incident has generated significant public discussion, highlighting the scrutiny that public officials face in maintaining standards of behavior consistent with the public trust. The lawmaker’s apology, along with his steps towards redress, will likely be closely monitored as he seeks to restore the confidence of his constituents and the wider Nigerian public.
