The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has mobilized 20,850 officers and men to secure a peaceful and hitch-free by-election across 12 states scheduled for Saturday, August 16.
The order, issued by NSCDC Commandant-General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, highlights the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding critical national infrastructure, securing election materials, and protecting polling officials. The exercise will be conducted in partnership with sister agencies, with the Nigeria Police serving as the lead security force.
According to a statement by the Corps’ spokesperson, CSC Afolabi Babawale, state commandants in the affected areas have been directed to uphold professionalism and respect for citizens’ fundamental human rights throughout the electoral process.
The by-elections are taking place across 16 constituencies spanning 12 states, covering:
2 senatorial districts
5 federal constituencies
9 state assembly seats
These elections are being held following a mix of resignations, deaths of officeholders, and court-ordered reruns—for example, in Anambra South Senatorial District and various state and federal constituencies.
INEC has assured the public that all non-sensitive electoral materials have already been delivered, while sensitive materials are being dispatched as scheduled. Voting technology, including Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices, have been configured and are ready for use.
Commandant-General Audi emphasized the NSCDC’s readiness to conduct its duties in collaboration with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police. This effort is primarily focused on ensuring the integrity of the election process and maintaining calm across affected areas.
He also called on eligible voters to turnout in large numbers, reaffirming that exercising their franchise is both a right and a civic responsibility.
