The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asserted that it does not require a formal coalition with other opposition parties to secure victory in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, though it remains open to strategic cooperation with like-minded political groups.
The declaration was made by party officials during a press briefing held on Friday afternoon, August 28, 2026, at the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja.
Addressing journalists during the event, Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, clarified the party’s official stance on opposition realignments. Okonkwo emphasized that while the ADC respects democratic partnerships, its structure, grassroots reach, and public support are robust enough to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) independently.
”Our candidate and our party possess the track record, platform, and national momentum required to win the presidency on our own merit,” Okonkwo stated. “While we do not depend on a formal coalition to win, our doors remain open to talks and strategic collaboration with genuine patriotic forces who share our vision to rescue Nigeria.”
The statement follows months of speculation surrounding broad opposition merger talks following high-profile political realignments. Party leaders underscored that while structured alliance talks with other groups have faced varying dynamics, the ADC is forging ahead with its nationwide mobilization campaign.
Also speaking at the briefing, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi reaffirmed that the party is positioning itself as the primary vehicle for democratic change ahead of the 2027 polls.
Abdullahi noted that the party’s focus remains on voters dissatisfied with current economic and security conditions rather than getting bogged down in inter-party negotiations.
The ADC leadership urged supporters and political allies across the country to remain focused as the campaign season unfolds.
