The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, citing ongoing reforms in the transportation sector as a key driver of its endorsement.
The association also called on the Federal Government to establish a specialised Bank of Transportation to provide sustainable financial backing for operators across the sector.
The endorsement was announced in a statement signed by the union on Friday.
According to the statement, the decision followed extensive consultations across RTEAN’s units, chapels, state, zonal and national structures.
National President of RTEAN, Musa Maitakobi, said members of the association were convinced that the current administration’s economic and infrastructural policies have begun to reposition road transportation as a critical pillar of national development.
Maitakobi noted that reforms initiated under Tinubu’s administration, particularly those affecting transportation and logistics, have created a more structured framework for operators and enhanced the sector’s contribution to economic growth, job creation and mobility.
He said the proposed Bank of Transportation would help address longstanding challenges faced by transport operators, including limited access to affordable credit, fleet renewal, and infrastructure financing.
According to him, a dedicated financial institution would enable operators to modernise their businesses, improve safety standards and expand services nationwide.
“Transportation remains the lifeblood of the Nigerian economy. With the right financial support and policy consistency, the sector can play a transformative role in national development,” Maitakobi said.
RTEAN reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to advance policies that promote efficiency, sustainability and growth within the road transport industry.
The association urged the government to deepen engagement with transport unions and operators, stressing that inclusive policymaking would ensure that reforms translate into tangible benefits for commuters, businesses and the wider economy.
