Fresh controversy has erupted within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following reports that the party may have quietly shortlisted former President Goodluck Jonathan, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as potential flagbearers for the 2027 general election.
According to party insiders, the move, said to be part of ongoing consultations by PDP governors and key stakeholders, is aimed at repositioning the opposition ahead of the contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the alleged shortlist has triggered sharp divisions among party loyalists, with some describing it as a “desperate attempt to recycle old names” while others see it as a pragmatic step to unite the fragmented opposition.
Reactions have been swift. Supporters of Jonathan argue that his international profile and experience in governance give him an edge, though critics warn that a comeback bid could reopen old wounds. Peter Obi’s inclusion, despite his current affiliation with the Labour Party, has fueled speculation of a possible merger or alliance, a scenario that many observers say could dramatically alter the political landscape.
