Former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally clarified his decision to join forces with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Kwankwaso declared that their alignment is strictly built on a shared commitment to offer Nigerians a distinct, workable alternative to the nation’s governance challenges.

Addressing journalists and party stakeholders during a national political conference hosted by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Kwankwaso emphasized that personal political ambition must take a backseat to national interest.

“Nigeria is at a critical juncture where continuing with business-as-usual political arrangements will only deepen our economic and social hardship,” Kwankwaso stated during his keynote address. “Peter Obi and I have agreed that leadership in 2027 must not be about individual ego or geopolitical supremacy. It must be about competence, fiscal discipline, and a structural shift in how this country is governed”.

Elaborating on the power-sharing arrangements and internal party consensus, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ibrahim Abdulkarim, held a separate press briefing at the NDC National Secretariat in Utako, Abuja. Abdulkarim confirmed that negotiations between both political movements had reached an advanced, structured agreement.

“The joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket under the NDC banner represents a unified national front bridging the North and the South,” Abdulkarim said. “Senator Kwankwaso’s decision to endorse Peter Obi as the presidential candidate, while stepping in to provide crucial leadership and northern grassroots consolidation demonstrates rare statesmanlike sacrifice intended to reform governance and secure victory”.

The announcement has triggered widespread political realignments as opposition figures, civil society groups, and grassroots coalitions evaluate the joint ticket’s potential to disrupt the traditional electoral dominance of the major political parties in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
